Lights Out in Circuit City

In analyzing why Circuit City went bankrupt and why I found these 2 articles to aid my analysis, Eight Reasons Why Circuit City Went Bankrupt by Peter Galuszka (http://blogs.bnet.com/ceo/?p=1493) and Circuit City to Shut Down by Parija B. Kavilanz (http://money.cnn.com/2009/01/16/news/companies/circuit_city/). After reading these articles and a few others I formed the conclusion that Circuit City went bankrupt because of poor managment mistakes and decisions such as firing experienced sales people, reacting to Best Buy rather than being innovative to compete with them. They were unable to stay in business because they could not find a supplier to sell merchandise to them because they wouldn't be able to pay for it in the end, especially since the credit market has frozen.

VALS

This week for our blog we were asked to research VALS and to take the VALS survey. Do you know what VALS is? It is a system that segments consumers by their personality traits and their behavior. This helps businesses marketing, product development, advertising, and customer servicing. The VALS system uses pyschology and personality research to determine consumer behavior.
After learning about VALS I took the survey they offer. The VALS segmentation has eight types, innovators, thinkers, achievers, experiencers, believers, strivers, makers, and survivors. My results for the survey were Experiencer as my primary motivation and Innovator as my secondary motivation . This means that I am motivated by self-expression, seek different experiences for excitement, and spend a lot of income on fashion and entertainment for what is "cool". They also have and outlet for their energy(no! not a plug-in outlet!), activities and hobbies, which I have many of. As an innovator I am a leader and use my resources to my advantage. I like to try new things and to work out challenges like they are a puzzle. I found that they VALS results for me are correct. You can take the VALS survey your self at http://www.sric-bi.com/VALS/presurvey.shtml. This was also my source for all my information on VALS.

About Aerie

Aerie was launched by the makers of American Eagle Outfitters at the beginning of 2006. The target market is that of the AE girl, ages ranging from 15 to 25. There are currently 116 Aerie stand-alone stores but a portion of the merchandise is also sold in American Eagle stores. Aerie has been called "a natural extension of the American Eagle brand" and is for "expanding the relationship with the AE girl whom we characterze as 'sweetly sexy'" this coming from the President and Chief Merchandising Officer, Susan McGalla. The sub-brand launch was announced in a press release on February 28th, 2006. The first stand-alone store grand opening was in Greenville, South Carolina at Haywood Mall August 17th, 2006.
In all the press releases about Aerie and it's plans for the future the sub-brand looks promising to stay afloat in today's economy. I think the store is dynamic enough that as well as selling to the AE girl, it reaches out to other girls. Therefore Aerie is multidimensional and successful in many areas.

My Favorite Retailer

I cannot say that I've ever had a perfect experience with a retailer. I've actually only had a few great experiences shopping where everything has worked out. I think with my standards though I will never be able to have a perfect retailing experience. I want clothes that don't cost a fortune but perform to my expectations and I want customer service from someone who gives an honest opinion and has good taste.
I work in retailing so I should know what is good customer service, right? I hardly ever recieve more than a "Hi. Welcome to ......". So besides product expectations I also have high customer service expectations because of the way I treat customers when I'm at work. I try to find out what their shopping for, make suggestions, and just connect with them.
So for my choice as my favorite retailer would have to be the store that I work at. This is a biased choice of course because I know that people that work there, so it's like I'm shopping with friends. I also get a nice discount when I get to the register and sometime there are even really good handouts after a storeset is done and the style guide is published. This store that I work at and view as my favorite retailer is Aerie. Aerie is an underwear and pajama brand made by American Eagle. I hoping though that I can soon enough come to find more favorite retailers that meet my standards and expectations.

Australian designer, Alice McCall provides inspiration in the development of my fashion sketches. Here is a look at some primary inspirational pieces from the collection titled "Welcome to the Dollhouse"...
